Rome is the room with the mirror in it. Prom, brides, the photos that go up before you've finished paying — this is where you come when somebody's going to be looking. Bring the picture you saved. It comes back matched, and it still looks right three weeks later.

Calhoun runs slower on purpose. The warm towel, the hand massage while your color cures, nobody moving you toward the door. It's the studio people call clean before they call it anything else, which tells you what they noticed walking in. Se habla español.

The welcome
Marble, a gold sign, and the lucky cat waving from the end of the desk. Walk-ins are welcome — show whoever looks up the picture you saved.

The window seats
A row of chairs along the front glass, for the Saturday before prom and the friend who came along to give an opinion.

The pedicure row
Brass sconces, marble set in arches, and a long run of massage chairs down both walls. Put your feet up. This is the part of the room that ends up in people's photos.

The tables
Marble tops under the arch lamps, where the work happens. Good light is half of getting a shade right, and every seat has its own.

The wall of color
Floor to ceiling, one wall of it. Point at a bottle, or ask which red we'd pick. We have an opinion.

And at the back, a coffee bar — so the hour goes by with a cup in whichever hand isn't drying.
